Commencement Day, May 13, 1989. Athens-Clarke County Sheriff Jerry Massey leads the procession in keeping with the ceremonial role of the local sheriff in University commencements since the early 1800s. Carrying the mace is the Law School’s Registrar, Marc Galvin. Carrying the banner of the School of Law is Class President Gregory McMenamy. Seen a little farther back is the day’s speaker, the United States Senator from the State of Georgia, the Honorable Wyche Fowler, Jr.
