Former Sen. Max Cleland to deliver guest lecture on international politics and Iraq
ATHENS, Ga. - Former U.S. Sen. J. Maxwell (Max) Cleland will be the guest speaker at an American Constitution Society meeting April 12 at 3:30 p.m. in the University of Georgia School of Law’s classroom B. The title of Cleland’s address is “International Politics in Iraq.” The meeting is open to the public, and admission is free.
Serving as the Carl Sanders Scholar at the School of Law, Cleland is a long-time public servant at both the state and national levels. In addition to serving as a U.S. Senator (1997-2003), he was Georgia’s secretary of state (1982-1996); administrator of the U.S. Veterans Administration (1977-81), now the Department of Veterans Affairs; a professional Senate staff member (1975-1977); a consultant to the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs (1975) and a Georgia state senator (1971-1975). He also served in the U.S. Army, where he attained the rank of captain in 1968, and was awarded the Bronze Star and a Silver Star for gallantry in action. He earned his master’s degree in American history from Emory University and his undergraduate degree from Stetson University.
Founded in 2001, the American Constitution Society for Law and Policy is comprised of law students, lawyers, scholars, judges, policymakers, activists and other concerned individuals throughout the country who are working to ensure that the fundamental principles of human dignity, individual rights and liberties, genuine equality, and access to justice are in a central place in American law. The UGA law student chapter of ACS was created in 2003.
