UGA LAW SCHOOL MOOT COURT TEAMS ADVANCE TO NATIONAL ABA FINALS

ATHENS, Ga. -- For the second year in a row, the University of Georgia School of Law is sending two teams to the national finals of the ABA's National Appellate Advocacy Competition. The teams, named regional co-champions earlier this month, will advance to the national finals in Chicago, April 14-17.

UGA's team of second-year law students Holly Cox, Lisa Durham and John Stephenson was undefeated in five rounds of regional competition and was recognized as having the First Best Brief in the tournament. Cox was named Fourth Best Oralist.

UGA's other championship team, comprised of second-year law students Wood Lovell, Jennifer Riley-Vala and Wanda Vance, posted a 3-2 record in the regional tournament and won the award for Fifth Best Brief. Riley-Vala was deemed Tenth Best Oralist.

The teams were coached by third-year law students Brian Ross and Charlie Peeler and advised by Atlanta attorney Holly Pierson, a 1996 UGA law graduate and veteran of the law school's award-winning moot court program.

"The University of Georgia School of Law has a long legacy of success in our moot court program," says David Shipley, law school dean. "Our students, faculty and alumni are committed to excellence, and I know our ABA team will represent the school well in the national finals next month."
