UGA LAW SERVICE ORGANIZATION HONORED BY ATHENS FOOD BANK
ATHENS, Ga. -- Members of Phi Alpha Delta, a law school service fraternity, have been honored by the Athens Area Emergency Food Bank for the most successful campus food drive during the 1997 holiday season. Phi Alpha Delta collected one-third of the food donated from campus organizations.
"The law students' compassion and enthusiasm resulted in the donation of over 1,500 pounds of food -- a figure that paced all departments and colleges at the University," said Associate Professor Paul Heald, who serves as secretary of the food bank. Phi Alpha Delta has organized the Amnesty Day Food Drive for the past four years and this past holiday season, expanded the drive to two days. The effort provides relief for the needy and students alike: students who hold up a can of food in class are granted amnesty from questioning; the cans of food are collected at the end of each class, and cans are also sold to students who forget their donations or exhaust their supply. All proceeds are donated to the food bank.
CAPTION: Members of Phi Alpha Delta legal fraternity were presented a plaque from the Athens Area Emergency Food Bank in appreciation for conducting the largest campus food collection during the 1997 holiday food drive. (l. to r.) Vice Justice Bil Heath, a second-year law student from Warner Robins; Vice Justice Jeff Rusbridge, a second-year law student from Canton; Phi Alpha Delta Justice Brandy Bayer, a third-year student from Warner Robins; and Associate Professor Paul Heald, secretary of the Athens Area Emergency Food Bank.
**Note: Bil Heath's name is spelled correctly. He has only one l in his first name.
