Candlelight service will be held for UGA faulty, staff and students; School of Law Professor Dupre among those to be remembered

UGA will honor the memory of 33 faculty, staff and students who died since May at its annual candlelight memorial service May 1 at 6 p.m. on the steps of the Chapel. The names of each of the 13 students and 20 faculty and staff members will be read aloud, followed by a toll of the Chapel bell and the lighting of a candle by members of the university's Arch Society. Georgia Law late Hosch Professor Anne Proffitt Dupre will be among those recognized.

Athens, Ga. - The University of Georgia will honor the memory of 33 faculty, staff and students who died since May at its annual candlelight memorial service May 1 at 6 p.m. on the steps of the Chapel.

UGA President Michael F. Adams will lead the service, called "Georgia Remembers . . . a Candlelight Memorial." The names of each of the 13 students and 20 faculty and staff members will be read aloud, followed by a toll of the Chapel bell and the lighting of a candle by members of the university's Arch Society.

The names will be read by Scott Shamp, chair of the executive committee of the University Council; Jerry Daniel, president of the Staff Council; and Will Burgess, president of the Student Government Association. UGA's Air Force ROTC will present the colors and ring the bell.

Adam Daniels, campus minister for the Georgia Christian Student Center, will deliver an opening prayer, and Joel Marcovitch, director of Hillel at UGA, will deliver a closing prayer. The Southern Wind Quintet from the Hugh Hodgson School of Music will provide music.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, the flames from the Arch Society's members' candles will be passed to attendees so they can light their own candles of remembrance. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held inside the Chapel.

Faculty and staff whose names will be read are: Mary Paige Adams, assistant research scientist in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; Fred Bateman, a professor of economics in the Terry College of Business; Clanton C. Black Jr., a research professor of biochemistry and molecular biology in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences; Linda Brooks, an associate professor of comparative literature in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences; Jackie E. Davis, a research technician in entomology research at the Coastal Plains Experiment Station in Tifton; Kevin Deweaver, a professor in the School of Social Work; Anne P. Dupre, a professor in the School of Law; Conrad Fink, director of academics in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication; Roberto Friedmann, an associate professor of marketing and distribution in the Terry College; Marco Fonseca, a senior public service associate in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; James Daniel Fouche Jr., a parking services monitor in Parking Services; Tyler Harris, a police officer with the police department; Anita Huff, an accounting assistant with Central Research Stores; Freddie J. Martin, a skilled trades worker with Central Foods Storage; Krista Mattocks, an associate accountant with the Tifton Diagnostic Laboratory; Ronald Monfort, a painter with the Physical Plant; Tafronica Lasha Ollie, a food services worker in the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel; Tariq Perwez, a research professional in the genetics department in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences; Michael Self, a fiscal compliance officer in the accounting division; and J. Douglas Toma, an associate professor with the Institute of Higher Education.

Students who will be remembered are: Logan Upshaw Bentley, a junior housing major from Athens; James Richard Carter III, a junior comparative literature major from Valdosta; René Marek Cieszewski, a junior mathematics major from Athens; Jeffery Scott Cook, a doctoral student in health promotion and behavior from Duluth; Charles Dalton Couey, a freshman sports management major from Springfield; Susannah Davis, a freshman foreign language education major from Brooklet; Barrett S. Lawrimore Jr., a graduate student from Grayson studying occupational studies; Howard Fisher Marks III, a junior management information systems major from Wilmington, N.C.; Bhavin Patel, a junior microbiology major from Thomaston; Richard Olaf Sabine Jr., a junior psychology major from Ringgold; Lexis Sierra Schantz, a sophomore pre-business and marketing major from Atlanta; Kenneth Rae Shoe, a senior psychology major from Hull; and Eric Wu, a doctoral student in psychology from Troy, Mich.
