On Sept. 26, Callaway Chair Emeritus Verner F. Chaffin will celebrate his 97th birthday. This Georgia Law 1942 alumnus and longtime law professor and his wife, Ethel, have recently made an additional gift to the law school so that the distinguished professorship bearing his name (initially established in the late 1990s) could be elevated into a professorial chair – the Verner F. Chaffin Chair in Fiduciary Law – in honor of this momentous occasion (a total of $1 million in the fund was necessary to make this change.).

A pre-birthday celebration was held on Sept. 12 with Chaffin’s family, Dean Peter B. “Bo” Rutledge, friends and a few alumni – Lawrence C. “Larry” Walker Jr. (J.D.’65) and Robert E. “Bobby” Sherrell (J.D.’65).

You can wish Professor Chaffin happy birthday on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/UGALawSchool and on Instagram and Twitter with the hashtags #Happy97Chaffin or #GeorgiaLaw, or you can deliver your wishes in person at the Georgia Law Homecoming BBQ on Oct. 17.

Notably, last year, the law school established a planned giving society named in honor of Chaffin, who specialized in the area of trusts and estates. All individuals who make a planned gift (through a life insurance policy, a retirement plan asset, a charitable gift annuity or an outright bequest) to the law school are members of the Verner F. Chaffin Society.
