PUBLIC SERVICE BENEFIT AUCTION TO BE HELD IN ATHENS

ATHENS, Ga. -- Autographed lyrics from REM's latest CD, a one-year membership to Gold's Gym, a dishwasher and many more eclectic items will be auctioned off at the Globe in downtown Athens on Friday, April 3 at 7 p.m. Proceeds from the public auction, co-sponsored by the Equal Justice Foundation (EJF) and Student Bar Association (SBA) -- student organizations at the University of Georgia School of Law -- will help support summer fellowships for law students who accept unfunded public interest law positions.

"The Athens community has been so supportive of our cause," said Amy Meyer, vice president of EJF. "This event has a three-fold purpose: to show appreciation for the community, to raise much-needed funds for the summer fellowships, and to have fun!"

Students who receive EJF fellowships provide public interest organizations with much-needed legal assistance during the summer. Many of these agencies have limited funding and rely on the help of volunteer law students to serve their clients effectively. Past EJF Fellows have worked for The Georgia Conservancy, The Multi-County Public Defender in Atlanta, Catholic Social Services in Atlanta, The National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the Atlanta Legal Aid Society's Senior Citizens Law Project.

The auction concludes the UGA law school's day-long celebration of Law Day, a national observance of the principles and practice of law and justice. Auctioneers for the event include two entertaining UGA law professors -- and veteran auctioneers -- J. Alton Hosch Professor Dan Coenen and Associate Dean and J. Alton Hosch Professor Paul Kurtz.

Selected items will be displayed for silent auction at the entrance of the UGA law library throughout the day. Final bids on those items, however, will be taken at the evening auction. Law students, faculty, staff, alumni and the general public are cordially invited to attend.
