Abstract

Conglomerate mergers are currently the center of attention in the corporate world. The Wall Street Journal recently published a three-part series on the conglomerate, which was labeled the "corporate phenomenon of the '60s." In a special report, Business Week wrote: "No creation of the U.S. economy reflects the vigor, imagination, and sheer brass of the 1960s more than the conglomerate corporations." Although they are the object of much discussion, little about conglomerates has been agreed upon except that their implications are dearly important.

The conglomerate merger has been under dose scrutiny for the past several years. The Senate Antitrust Subcommittee has conducted an open- end symposium on conglomerate mergers and industry concentration since 1964. A special report on the legal status of conglomerates was prepared for President Johnson by a White House task force headed by Phil C. Neal, dean of the University of Chicago Law School." In addition, at the request of the Senate Antitrust Subcommittee, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is currently studying ten conglomerates to determine their effect on competition and will probably recommend legislation in the summer of 1969.
