UGA to Reopen Wednesday, Delayed Start

Abstract

UGA to Reopen Wednesday, Delayed Start

Tuesday, September 12, 2017

The University of Georgia will delay its opening until 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 13. The first classes will begin at 10:10 a.m. Business operations on the Athens campus will resume their normal schedules beginning at 10 a.m.

After careful assessment, campus emergency preparedness and safety leaders have determined that extra time is needed for Georgia Power to restore power to traffic signals and for Athens-Clarke County and university crews to remove debris that is causing safety concerns.

Campus Transit will resume service at 9 a.m. Information about dining and other campus services will be posted on Twitter and emergency.uga.edu as it becomes available.

As you plan your travel for Wednesday, please keep in mind the following suggestions:

  • Travel to campus is likely to take longer than usual. Plan accordingly.

  • Traffic lights at some intersections are still out. In the event that power is not restored by morning, you should take extra care at intersections. Any intersection without a working traffic signal should be treated as a 4-way stop.

  • If you are traveling from off campus (particularly from outside Athens), you should defer to local emergency management officials on the routes to take and whether travel is safe.

We realize that some individuals might still face challenging situations regarding travel. Faculty, staff and students are urged to consider their personal safety first and travel with caution. Faculty and supervisors are encouraged to accommodate those who may face travel difficulties.

The safety of our campus community is our top priority.
