UGA School of Law to host annual benefit auction for student fellowships

Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia School of Law’s Equal Justice Foundation will host its 32nd annual benefit auction March 18 at 6:30 p.m. at The Foundry in downtown Athens. The evening will include both live and silent auctions.

Proceeds from the event will go toward EJF summer fellowships, which help support Georgia Law students working in summer public interest positions for little or no compensation. The event is free, and the public is invited to attend.

Items collected for this year’s auction include: tickets to the show of choice at the 40 Watt and the Georgia Theatre, a Creature Comforts gift certificate, game nights and activities with Georgia Law alumni and faculty, and dinner at professors’ homes, among other packages and gift certificates.

Last year, proceeds from the auction allowed EJF to award 10 fellowships to Georgia Law students working in public interest positions across the country. Some organizations where Georgia Law students have worked in the past include: public defender offices across the state, the Atlanta Legal Aid Society, The Bronx Defenders, Gideon’s Promise, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Humane Society and the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights.

“The fellowships funded by this annual auction supplement those supported by the law school and further speaks to the law school’s commitment of instilling in our students the importance of serving communities in need,” Georgia Law Dean Peter B. “Bo” Rutledge said. “Last summer, in total, more than 20 law students served in public interest fellowships.”

The Equal Justice Foundation is a student-run organization devoted to the promotion of public interest law.
