World Trade Organization
Abstract
This chapter looks at the World Trade Organization (WTO) and its potential interaction with international trade standards. The chapter covers the history of the WTO and its structure and dispute settlement processes, as well as current controversies regarding the WTO Appellate Body. The chapter also outlines points of conflict between WTO conventions and the principles and labor provisions of many trade treaties, with particular attention given to defenses for trade sanctions and labor rights criteria in generalized system of preferences programs.
